SERIOUS RIOT IN HONG

KONG.

(FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT.)

HONG-KONG, WEDNESDAY.

A riot has taken place, arising in the first

place from some children throwing stones. The police interfered, and fired into the mob, killing a number of Chinese.

The Government here are behaving in a most arbitrary manner, thereby greatly heightening the anti-English feeling excited among the natives, by their compelling the dock labourers rto work at the French ships.

Some oppressive laws have been passed,

a among others one forbidding any trade in

t arms between the Chinese and Europeans.

Large numbers of the Chinese inhabitants have 1 been deported by the authorities without any form of trial. General opinion strongly con- which Government are demns the course taking.
